Burton Rockwell, 1920-2010

Burton Lowe Rockwell was born in 1920 in Utica, New York. Following his service as a captain in the United States Army during World War II, he earned both his Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rockwell began his professional career for John Lyon Reid in San Francisco, and subsequently became a partner in John Lyon Reid & Partners, Reid Rockwell Banwell & Tarics, and Rockwell & Banwell. He opened a private practice for a few years before becoming a partner in Rockwell, Chatham, Marshall, and Rockwell & Rockwell, Architects. Notable projects include the University of California San Francisco Health Science Instruction & Research Building, the Lafayette-Orinda United Presbyterian, and the Santa Cruz County Governmental Center.

The Burton Rockwell Collection (circa 1946-1985) contains student work, brochures, drawings, photographs, slides, clippings, and project descriptions relating primarily to educational and religious buildings, but relating to major municipal and minor residential projects as well.
